Russian private military company (also known as Centre R / Redut Security) established in 2008 under the patronage of oligarch Gennady Timchenko and GRU Deputy Head Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev. Despite its PMC designation, investigations revealed Redut is a front organization created, financed, and controlled by Russia GRU (military intelligence), specifically the 16th Separate Guards Special Purpose Brigade. Initially provided security for Timchenko Stroytransgaz facilities in Syria. Since 2022, transformed into a major combat force in Ukraine, growing from 200-300 fighters to approximately 25,000 by 2024. After Wagner Group collapse, expanded into Africa as Russia replacement mercenary force. Designated a terrorist organization by Ukraine.
